Magnitude 7.4 Quake Rocks Eastern Coast
At Least Nine Dead, Over 800 Injured
A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck off Taiwan's eastern coast on Wednesday, causing significant damage and casualties.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 3:36 a.m. local time, about 50 kilometers off the coast of Hualien County. The earthquake was the strongest to hit the island in nearly 25 years.
The quake sent shockwaves throughout Taiwan, shaking buildings and causing panic among residents. At least nine people have been confirmed dead, primarily in Hualien County, while over 800 others have been injured.
